I tend to build with 27ga kanthal, 8-wraps at 2.5mm and that gives me between 1.2 ohms and 1.3 ohms which I find perfect for my taste.
I'm just curious as to how others build .. what sort of resistance do you find best, what size coils do you find easiest, etc.?
Do any of you guys build/use sub ohm coils?
Also, what about wick? I use cotton, tried silica string but didn't like it so straight back to cotton.

For years I was pretty settled with 28ga over a 2.5mm mandrel - I still build the wife's V3 this way - but last year I became pretty smitten with 26ga at 0.9 - 1.0 ohm.
It's not going to be an immediate fire for quick puffs (like smoking a cigarette), but a slower to warm, with somewhat denser vapor, that suits me better in a pipe.
As of late, I've been really enjoying dual twisted 29ga. This give a resistance along the lines of the 26ga, while the twisted wires creates more surface area. The flavor from this is quite nice.
In the V3, I still use the 2.5mm mandrel, but have been liking a 3mm mandrel for winding the coil for the V5. The reason - the larger V5 chamber is in the neighborhood of 27% larger than that of the V3, which, in spite of being labeled as "mini", is the same chamber size as that of the older KFL.

I typically build my Kayfuns with 28 gage Kanthal on a 2.5mm rod at 1.0 to 1.2 ohm. This works well for me.

PipeSmith .. is 'dual twisted' something you twist together yourself or do you buy it ready twisted (so to speak)?

Either/ both
I twisted the 29ga that I'm currently using, primarily because I have a spool of 29ga that isn't getting used, but the twisted wire is pretty readily available commercially.
Remember that twisting the wire effectively cut's it's resistance in half while also doubling the mass, so you'll be looking for wire of smaller gauge (higher number) than that which you're currently using.

Has anyone tried a mini clapton? I was thinking of building one and shooting for something in the range of .6-.9 ohms. Like Ken's twisted wire idea but stepped up a bit.

I think you may find that most of these exotic coils are a bit too taxing for running straight from the battery power, resulting in less than stellar performance. There's a lot of additional mass introduced that has to be heated in order to create vaporization. The VV/ VW guys get away with this by using the electronic boards to to step up to the added demands, though they still tend to forget how taxing this is on the battery. Simple coils = simply dependable. /K

Fair enough. Makes sense. Simple is also quick and easy, so I'll start there. Thanks!

Today we're running a vertical coil in the KF V3 8 wraps of 27ga. around 1.9mm/ 5/64" mandrel at 1.o Ohm
Of course, my favored Nat Sherman, 50/50, 6mg

How did you do the verticle coil? Got any pics

How did you do the verticle coil? Got any pics I'll try to get some photos later today. I did move back up to the 2.3mm/ 3/32" ID coil /K

I did move back up to the 2.3mm/ 3/32" ID coil /K I've put this on hold for a bit - still working with the wicking. When it's "right", flavor production is really good. The hurdle is getting the wicking on the V3 build deck to be consistent without being finicky or troublesome to set up - and you know I'm not going to bother with something that needs to be coddled. When I can devote little more time to it, we'll see about doing a set up tutorial. /K

No problem. Get it right then you can tell the rest of us how to do it so we can enjoy it too.
