I needed a current fresh build, and this Lodge Series Huntsman had some chip-out, so I claimed it as a shop pipe. Added a bit of surfacing & color around the waist, and some attention to the fire button. Still haven't set up for photos, but can grab some better photos later if anyone's interested. PS

PS PipeSmith .. if I'm not mistaken, your stem 'shoulder' seems to go all the way over the K5 right to the top .. how did you do that?

PS PipeSmith .. if I'm not mistaken, your stem 'shoulder' seems to go all the way over the K5 right to the top .. how did you do that? No sir, you aren't mistaken at all........ To achieve what I consider the perfect "Shop & Field" pipe, I wanted a really short, stubby set up that retained the aesthetics of the pipe, while also being completely absent of any opportunity for the stem to become knocked loose and/ or dislodged. This achieved my goal. This began as a shorty stem blank with a slightly larger base that I had around; it is affixed permanently to the V5 lid. Since the V5 tank body rotates to open the juice feed, indexing isn't an issue - when it's time to refill/ rebuild, the lid unscrews as normal, and the lid & stem remove as one assembly. I permanently seated a modified insert similar as to how the "SRS" set up worked - a set screw through the wall of the lid nipple - then permanently affixed the stem, which had been bored slightly different in order to accommodate the revised configuration. Allowed it all to cure, finished the stem with a slight bend, and I'm still using it today. PS

I like it .. good idea but I take it a 'special' stem would be required to do this, not the standard stems?

I like the set up, and still considering making some for folks who may like them. If there's a downside, it's that if you break the stem, the lid wouldn't be much use, as the stem base would still be permanently adhered into the lid. PS

Right .. so a spare stem lid may come in handy?

Sure, that would definitely be prudent to have a spare on hand.
The idea. if I chose to pursue it, is to have different stems that would be affixed to V5 bases, then the user could have a choice of whichever they wish to use - just as easily as unscrewing the atty lid, and screwing on another.
