Whilst I have to be honest and admit my first purchase will be a completed Lodge .. I do like the idea of getting a Legend sometime in the future and trying out my own ideas on it.
Have many on here done that? How did you get on, did it work out as planned or not as you had imagined? Did it turn out better than planned .. or not?
I've never been great with wood .. other than chopping it for the fire so I'm a bit hesitant to taking on a wooden pipe project but that said, I do overthink things (or so Mrs Kite says). I did build a log store from scratch and that turned out OK and I do the odd log candle feature .. basically half a limb with three holes in it that takes little tea-light type candles and sits in the fire over the summer months to give off a nice glow but without lighting the fire so maybe it will work out fine?
I've looked at some of the guides on the PipeSmith website and they seem easy to follow, a couple of things I'll need to ask when I embark upon my first stem but other than that, doesn't seem too difficult. (Famous last words)!

Remember that the "Legend Series" bodies are completely assembled, tuned, and ready to use, and will operate just as the "Lodge Series" pipes - you simply have more input into the finished product.
The "Lodge Series" bodies do have a bit of shaping/ surfacing and finish applied, but it's also a great opportunity to drive the working pipe body while determining a particular shaping for the "Legend" body that you may like to undertake.
The "Taper Bore Stem Kits" are about as straight forward as can be, and provide an economical vaping stem solution for the user, and creates a great stem/ atomizer fit, as the build is centered around your atomizer of choice.
I promise you - if you can follow directions thoroughly enough to tie your own shoes, you'll fair just fine with your builds; I set them up that way in order to create a fun and engaging project, while not being too overwhelming.
If you encounter any issue at all, we're only an email away, and the great PipeSmith family here are always interested in following user's builds, offering any help or suggestions they can, or maybe even learning something neat from your build.
You can do it

Go for it Fred or is it Ron, I can't remember . I like you was hesitant to finish up my Challenger but once I did it has become a very special pipe for me. I plan to do more in the future. You can't beat a PipeSmith pipe for performance and toughness. Ken is a great guy to work with and has made it about as easy as it can be to create your own special pipe. Good luck when you jump in and do it and like Ken said the PipeSmith family is only an email away.
